Mindful Dialogue: Exploring deeper ways for us to grow together as a community facilitated by Oliver Markley

Mon, 2017/06/05 - 4:45pm

Several of us have expressed a desire that we include more time for group dialogue in our IONS/ACE meetings.  As I reflected on this during creative meditation when planning for future meetings, I got the intuitive insight that it could be very uplifting to explore combining three different “best practices” in something that could rightfully be called “Mindful Dialogue”.

Bohm Dialogue (also known as Bohmian Dialogue or "Dialogue in the Spirit of David Bohm") is a freely flowing group conversation in which participants attempt to reach a common understanding, experiencing everyone's point of view fully, equally and nonjudgmentally. This can lead to new and deeper understandings. It is named after physicist David Bohm who originally proposed this form of dialogue based on his theoretical understanding of the way thoughts relate to universal reality, as a way to help solve the communication crises that face society, and indeed the whole of human nature and consciousness..

Mindfulness is the process of bringing one's attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment.  Large population-based research studies have indicated that the practice of mindfulness is strongly correlated with greater well-being and perceived health. A useful introduction is https://www.mindful.org/meditation/mindfulness-getting-started/. The well-known five step process recommended by mindfulness meditation teachers: Breathe, Relax, Feel, Watch, Allow  (or more simply: Relax, Observe, Allow) can greatly facilitate the process of Mindful Dialogue.

Voice Dialogue is a foundational concept underlying the various dualistic and transcendental “voices” we experientially explored in our last meeting - Big Mind / Big Heart / Integrated Self with Dennis Genpo Merzel.  Recognizing which “voice” is predominant at any given moment can significantly clarify one’s own practice of mindfulness, especially when in dialogue with others whose views you may not understand or agree with. (If you haven’t seen it, you can experience the 2hr 28min introduction we watched at our last meeting at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n22a1Hf4rjk).

This program will feature an introductory description of these approaches, followed by a several stage dialogue - starting with very small groups and ending with a large circle - in which we share our ideas and personal experiences about the whole idea of exploring consciousness, conscious evolution and/or “ascension.” Come and be prepared for a whole new kind of exploration of consciousness.
